They learned 3D literally by trial and error, without ANYONE to teach them. There's an interview with Baldessarini saying he spent months fiddling around to make a basic shape of a Christmas tree in the early 90s. These people deserve respect for that. Besides, what you describe is exactly what any artist does, or anyone trying to be professional for that matter. It is literally the essence of our society.

You just have some really skewed picture in your head of some wealthy self-centered elitist old asshole hoarding some kind of ominous magic in his endless greed, when it's the exact opposite. These people MADE the industry you're looking at. Without them, none of this would exist. If you really want to hate someone, hate the creative directors and writers. Filthy pieces of shit like Druckmann who abuse the medium for their slimy agendas. But don't hate the production artists under them.
